Vladimír Michálek (1956), graduated from the Prague FAMU - in documentary film. During his Academy studies he worked as an assistant director or a second unit director at Barrandov Studios. He has shot some of his own documentaries and musical clips with David Koller and Michal Dvořák. He successfully debuted with adaptation of Franz Kafka's nove Amerika (1994) in full-length film genre. After the film Zapomenuté světlo (aka Forgotten Light) he has shot a drama from Nazi occupation period Je třeba zabít Sekala (aka Sekal Has to Die).
After FAMU study he worked as an assistant director mainly to foreign directors. In that period he began to shoot his own documentaries and from 1989 also his own features. He has collaborated with 26 directors, e.g. M. v. Trotte, (Rosa Luxembourg, 1985), B. Wicky, (The Spiders Net I, II, 1986,1988), R. Hauff (The Blue Eyed, 1989), A. Klageneck (The Bertinis, 1987), P. Weigl ( A Village Romeo and Juliet, 1989), A. Birkin (The Burning Secret, 1987), T. Kotchef (The Shooter, 1995). His solo documentaries: V chrámu přírody, Ticho, které bolí, Barrandov, The Junkies, O, Mr. Anderson...
